Habitat:
Uncommon to locally frequent in a large bedrock outcrop complex atop a 100-foot ridge. In thin detrital-organic soil over level to sloping granitic bedrock. Small dense patches, typically amongst Cladina lichens. Full sun.

Additional associates include Vaccinium angustifolium, Juniperus communis, Amelanchier spicata, Prunus susquehanae, P. pensylvanica, Rhus glabra, Woodsia ilvensis, Sibbaldiopsis tridentata, Corydalis sempervirens, Verbascum thapsus, Agrostis scabra, Dichanthelium linearifolium, Danthonia spicata.
