Common in shallow water. In water ~2-4 feet deep, from near the shore to far out in the shallow bay. Full sun.

Associates include Najas flexilis, Utricularia vulgaris, U. intermedia, Myriophyllum verticillatum, Potamogeton gramineus, P. pusillus var. tenuissimus, Nymphaea odorata, Brasenia schreberi, Zizania palustris.
