United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; On the shores of Basswood Lake in fairly rugged bedrock terrain 12 miles northeast of Ely. Local near campsite #30 on the north shore of Pipestone Bay, one mile southwest of Lewis Narrows.

Small loose patches, rooted amongst moss and lichen mats in thin detritus over bedrock on a 15-foot high southeasterly sloping granitic outcrop. Level to gently sloping settings 5-15 feet above the lake. Mostly in full sun.
Associates include Poa compressa, Danthonia spicata, Commandra umbellata, Selaginella rupestris, Senecio pauperculus, Achillea millefolium, Potentilla tridentata, Rhus glabra, Prunus susquehanae, Juniperus communis, Fraxinus pennsylvanica.
