Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; On the shores of Basswood Lake in rolling bedrock terrain 14 miles northeast of Ely; on the western shore of the main body of the lake southwest of Washington Island.

Habitat: Occasional to locally abundant. Forming small to large, loose to dense patches. Partial sun to full shade of Ulmus americana, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, F. nigra, Acer saccharinum, Alnus incana, Thuja occidentalis, and huge Pinus strobus. Moist sandy settings near the lake; also in wet muck in vernal ash swamp behind an extensive sand beach.
Associated Species: Associates include Galium trifidum, Persicaria amphibia, Lycopus uniflorus, Equisetum arvense, Mentha arvensis, Phalaris arundinacea, Carex arcta, C. tuckermanii.
