United States, Minnesota, Stearns, St. Johns University Arboretum Woods; Strongly rolling forested moraine 3.5 miles west of St. Joseph, 3.5 miles southeast of Avon; at the southwestern tip of Lake Sagatagan.

Habitat:
Very locally abundant on a steep, 40-foot, north-facing slope above a small bay. Mesic hardwood forest dominated by mature Quercus rubra, Tilia americana, and Acer saccharum. Tall understory of Acer saccharum and Ostrya virginiana. Forming loose to dense patches, thousands of fronds here. Silty soil.

Associates include Athyrium angustum, Osmunda claytoniana, Amphicarpaea bracteata, Uvularia grandiflora, Thalictrum dioicum, Actaea rubra, Solidago flexicaulis, Hepatica americana, Aster macrophyllus, Carex pedunculata.
