Habitat:
Occasional to common in rich mesic hardwood forest on the slopes of a 240-foot north-facing bluff and on the narrow valley floor. Canopy of mature Acer saccharum, Tilia americana, Quercus rubra, Fraxinus americana, and Prunus serotina on the slopes, with Ulmus americana, Fraxinus nigra, Acer nigrum, and Celtis occidentalis on the bottomland. Understory of Ostrya virginiana, Acer saccharum, Carpinus caroliniana, Staphylea trifolia, and Ulmus americana. Dense patches, often quite large. Silty soil.
