Occasional to frequent rather locally on the lower third of a very steep, 200-foot, north-facing bluff. Weakly-algific microsite in rich mesic hardwood forest. Small to large trees (to ~20 inches D.B.H.) in a patchy canopy with Tilia americana. Very rocky (dolomite) colluvial silt.
Additional associates include Acer spicatum, Sambucus pubens, Adiantum pedatum, Asarum canadense, Circaea alpina, Laportea canadensis, Hydrophyllum virginianum, Cystopteris bulbifera, Impatiens capensis, Mitella diphylla.
