Habitat:
Locally common on low sandstone cliffs on the lower portion of a steep, 200-foot, north-facing bluff. Moist, mossy, north-facing Jordan sandstone, 6-12 feet high. Shaded by the surrounding mesic hardwood forest (including Acer saccharum, Tilia americana, Ulmus americana, Fraxinus nigra, and Ostrya virginiana). Small loose patches rooted in crevices and in fine shallow sand on narrow ledges; often in carpets of mosses and liverworts. Well distributed on two cliffs that are ~50 feet apart here.

Associates include Cystopteris bulbifera, Sullivantia renifolia, Circaea alpina, Arabis laevigata, Taxus canadensis.
