Habitat:
Local, occasional on steep, 20-foot, north-facing slope; especially on upper half of a very steep, 12-foot cut-bank. Partial to full shade of Abies balsamea, Populus tremuloides, Alnus incana, and Corylus cornuta. Eroding sand; often in moss mats.
Associated Species:
Associates include Equisetum scirpoides, Prenanthes alba, Aralia nudicaulis, Pyrola asarifolia, Maianthemum canadense, Cornus canadensis, Taraxacum officinale, and Abies balsamea seedlings. Also infrequent in clay over sand on less steep and more stable substrate settings in the adjacent mesic aspen-fir forest.
