Local, forming small but fairly dense patches in a small (~1/4-acre) patch of semi-terrestrial white cedar, on the edge of a much larger black ash swamp. Canopy locally dominated by mature Thuja occidentalis and Fraxinus nigra. Understory of Alnus incana and Acer spicatum. Few fertile stems here.
Associates include Carex leptalea, C. intumescens, C. gracillima, C. retrorsa, Equisetum sylvaticum, E. arvense, Dryopteris carthusiana, Rubus pubescens, Thalictrum dasycarpum.
