Occasional in cedar and ash swamp. Interrupted canopy of mature Thuja occidentalis, with occasional Fraxinus nigra and Betula allegheniensis. Occasional Alnus incana and Acer spicatum in a patchy understory. Fairly dense clumps, often on low mossy hummocks (Hylocomium, Thuidium, Rhytidiadelphus, Dicranum, Ptilium).
Additional associates include Carex leptalea, C. disperma, C. peckii, C. gracillima, C. pedunculata, Luzula acuminata, Cornus canadensis, Rubus pubescens, Equisetum pratense, E. arvense, Phegopteris connectilis.
