Habitat:
Local along a ski trail (old two-track logging road) through mesic aspen-fir forest northeast of Gem Lake. In partial shade of maturing Populus tremuloides, Betula papyrifera, and Abies balsamea. Compacted rocky silt, moist from heavy rains, here shallow to dacitic quartz-feldspar porphyry (metasedimentary) bedrock. Gradual southerly slope. Several robust clumps; highly variable culm length, bases maroonish-brown.
