Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Strongly rolling bedrock terrain north of the Fernberg Road between the Moose Lake Road and Uncle Judas Creek, 16 miles east-northeast of Ely.

Verbatim Elevation: 1450 feet
Habitat: Local along a ski trail (old two-track logging road) through mesic aspen-fir forest northeast of Gem Lake. In partial shade of maturing Populus tremuloides, Betula papyrifera, and Abies balsamea. Compacted rocky silt, moist from heavy rains, here shallow to dacitic quartz-feldspar porphyry (metasedimentary) bedrock. Gradual southerly slope. Several robust clumps; highly variable culm length, bases maroonish-brown.
Associated Species: Associates include Pteridium aquilinum, Aster macrophyllus, Ranunculus acris, Cornus canadensis, Diervilla lonicera, Carex gracillima, Luzula acuminata.
