Locality: United States, Minnesota, Hubbard, Level to gently rolling sandy outwash 1.5 miles northeast of the Badoura State Forest Nursery, nine miles south of Akeley.

Habitat: Uncommon in dry jack pine woodland. Interrupted canopy of mature Pinus banksiana. Deep sand with an organic cap. Thick moss carpets dominated by Pleurozium schreberi, with frequent Thuidium and Dicranum. Loose patch of a few dozen plants here, uncommon and sporadic in the vicinity. Inflorescences infrequent. Stems run horizontally atop the sand, below the moss.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Danthonia spicata, Oryzopsis pungens, O. asperifolia, Andropogon gerardii, Gaultheria procumbens, Linnaea borealis, Cypripedium acaule, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Vaccinium angustifolium.
