Mature northern boreal mixed woods;
Scattered in moss near a drying bog;
Tsuga, Betula
Found just off the Nature lodge trail during an informal foray near the edge of a drying bog. Specimens were scattered in the moss with some quite large and more mature. Size and orangish tint is what first caught our eyes and soon noticed the smell. The smell of maple syrup was remarkably strong and even more so when dried. We did not taste. Nearest trees were birch and hemlock but area is a healthy mix of hardwoods and conifers typical of a boreal forest. Decurrent gills produced a watery latex in some specimens, but some were too dry or mature to produce latex...latex did not stain on drying and gills, cap and stipe were all of similar brown/orangish color. Largest specimen was nearly 6 inches across with stipes up to 3 inches long that featured a hollow middle when you trim the bottom of the stem...this hollow zone goes all the way into the pileus but stem walls are rather thick inspite of the hollow zone.
