Locally common along open forest roadside edge. Northern hardwood forest dominated by Populus grandidentata, Betula papyrifera, Quercus rubra, Picea glauca.
Sandy loam.
Dendrolycopodium dendroideum, Oryzopsis asperifolia, Cornus canadensis, Fragaria sp.
Patch 4m x 2m. All strobili solitary.
