Habitat:
Occasional quite locally. In coarse sand atop a sand beach (~30 inches above lake level) in a small shoreline cove. Partial shade of Acer saccharinum and Fraxinus pennsylvanica growing along the margin of a small wetland just behind on the inland side of) the beach. Branching shrubs, to ~10 feet tall.

Associates include Cornus racemosa, Prunus susquehanae, Quercus macrocarpa, Rosa acicularis, Parthenocissus inserta, Toxicodendron rydbergii, Amelanchier sp., Viburnum rafinesquianum, Lathyrus venosus.
