Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Fairly rugged bedrock terrain ten miles north-northeast of Ely, on the western side of the largest island in the southwestern end of Jackfish Bay, Basswood Lake.

Habitat: Occasional to common. Forming small to rather large and sometimes dense patches in a mixed mesic forest dominated by Betula papyrifera and Abies balsamea, with scattered Pinus strobus. Understory of Abies balsamea, and occasional Acer spicatum. Partial sun to full shade. Rocky, sandy silt. Many-branched spreading shrubs, to ~4 feet tall. Most abundant and vigorous near campsite #40; plants are smaller and more scattered eastward on the island.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Rubus strigosus, Corylus cornuta.
