Habitat:
Frequent in a peatland recovering from long-past beaver flooding (formerly a poor conifer swamp / spruce bog). Deep saturated peat, especially in subtly wetter spots. Fairly continuous Sphagnum carpets. Mostly in full sun (some in partial shade of small Picea mariana, Betula papyrifera, and Pinus strobus). Loose patches.

Additional associates include Glyceria canadensis, Carex utriculata, C. stricta, C. magellanica, Drosera rotundifolia, Solidago uliginosa, Thelypteris palustris, Aster umbellatus, Dryopteris cristata, Chamaedaphne calyculata.
