Local in the ecotone between a steep, 80-foot, north-facing slope and an open peatland recovering from long-past beaver flooding (formerly a poor conifer swamp / spruce bog). Loose patch of a few dozen shoots in a mesic boreal setting. Partial shade of Picea glauca, P. mariana, Betula papyrifera, Pinus strobus, and P. banksiana. Rocky, silty-organic soil. Thick moss mats (Sphagnum, Pleurozium).
Associates include Lycopodium clavatum, L. lagopus, Athyrium angustum, Coptis trifolia, Cornus canadensis, Linnaea borealis, Clintonia borealis, Gaultheria hispidula.
