Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Along the shores of Basswood Lake in rugged bedrock terrain 10 miles north-northeast of Ely, along the northern shoreline of Jackfish Bay.

Habitat: Quite local in a small patch of mesic hardwood forest in a narrow zone between the steep southeast face of a 120-foot bedrock ridge and the shoreline. Canopy locally of large Tilia americana and Betula papyrifera. Understory of Acer spicatum. Gentle to moderately steep, southeast-facing slope, below 30- to 50-foot granitic cliffs. Rocky, silty soil, with scattered boulders and talus blocks. Forming small, dense clumps; often in small loose patches.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Cornus rugosa, Aralia nudicaulis, Aster macrophyllus.
