Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Fairly rugged bedrock terrain north of Jackfish Bay, Basswood Lake, 13 miles north-northeast of Ely. Above the south shore of Chelsinik Lake.

Habitat: Gentle to fairly steep lower north-facing slope a 160-foot ridge. Uncommon and local in conifer woodland dominated by Picea mariana, with scattered Pinus banksiana. Understory is mostly Picea mariana and Abies balsamea. Sandy-loam, fairly shallow to granitic bedrock. Carpets of Pleurozium schreberi, Hylocomium splendens, and Dicranum sp. 14 stems occur in the largest clump, most with 1-3 stems.
Associated Species: Associates include Cornus canadensis, Monotropa uniflora, Cypripedium acaule, Gaultheria hispidula, Vaccinium myrtilloides.
