Locality:
United States, Minnesota, St. Louis, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Strongly rolling to fairly rugged bedrock terrain nine miles north-northeast of Ely, on the north side of Mudro Lake.

Habitat:
Rare and local in pine-oak woodland atop a 120-foot ridge. Shaded beneath a patchy canopy of Pinus resinosa and P. strobus, and a quite dense, tall understory dominated by Quercus rubra, with frequent Acer rubrum and Populus tremuloides. Brown silty soil with frequent stones, often fairly shallow over granitic bedrock.

Additional associates include Pteridium aquilinum, Maianthemum canadense, Gaultheria procumbens, Aster macrophyllus, Clintonia borealis, Vaccinium angustifolium, Comptonia peregrina, Diervilla lonicera, Oryzopsis asperifolia.
