Locality: United States, Minnesota, St. Louis, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Strongly rolling to fairly rugged bedrock terrain nine miles north-northeast of Ely, on the north side of Mudro Lake.

Habitat: Rare and local in pine-oak woodland atop a 120-foot ridge. Shaded beneath a patchy canopy of Pinus resinosa and P. strobus, and a quite dense, tall understory dominated by Quercus rubra, with frequent Acer rubrum and Populus tremuloides. Brown silty soil with frequent stones, often fairly shallow over granitic bedrock.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Pteridium aquilinum, Maianthemum canadense, Gaultheria procumbens, Aster macrophyllus, Clintonia borealis, Vaccinium angustifolium, Comptonia peregrina, Diervilla lonicera, Oryzopsis asperifolia.
