Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. At the northern end of Horse Lake, in rolling to rugged bedrock terrain 14 miles north-northeast of Ely.

Habitat: Occasional locally in a ~1/2-acre clearing (old logging camp) next to the lake. A few dozen plants in a gently sloping upland setting adjacent to a low granitic outcrop. Silty soil. Full sun. Largest plants are over 7 feet tall. Lower stem with a large central hollow. Plants with white milky sap.
Associated Species: Associates include Calamagrostis canadensis, Epilobium angustifolium, Achillea millefolium, Equisetum sylvaticum, Fallopia cilinodis, Cirsium arvense, Geum aleppicum, Aster lanceolatus, Rubus superioris, Rosa acicularis.
