United States, Minnesota, Lake of the Woods, Red Lake Reservation. Extensive peatland complex between the North Branch of the Rapid River and Gustafson's Camp, 20 miles southwest of Baudette.

Local in a young aspen forest, on a subtle upland rise just above the elevation of the peatland. Shaded beneath even-aged (~ten-year old) Populus tremuloides, with occasional Betula papyrifera. Patchy tall understory of Alnus incana. Mesic loamy soil; thick humus. Loose colony with dozens of upright shoots; strobili rare here.
Associates include Lycopodium clavatum, Equisetum sylvaticum, Maianthemum canadense, Pteridium aquilinum, Cornus canadensis, Clintonia borealis, Rubus pubescens, R. strigosus, Vaccinium angustifolium, Carex peckii, C. deweyana.
