Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake of the Woods, Red Lake Reservation. Extensive peatland complex between the North Branch of the Rapid River and Gustafson's Camp, 20 miles southwest of Baudette.

Habitat: Local in a young aspen forest, on a subtle upland rise just above the elevation of the peatland. Shaded beneath even-aged (~ten-year old) Populus tremuloides, with occasional Betula papyrifera. Patchy tall understory of Alnus incana. Mesic loamy soil; thick humus. Loose colony with dozens of upright shoots; strobili rare here.
Associated Species: Associates include Lycopodium clavatum, Equisetum sylvaticum, Maianthemum canadense, Pteridium aquilinum, Cornus canadensis, Clintonia borealis, Rubus pubescens, R. strigosus, Vaccinium angustifolium, Carex peckii, C. deweyana.
