Locality:
United States, Minnesota, Lake, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. Rugged bedrock terrain near the shore of Lake Superior between Corundum Point and Little Two Harbors. Scattered clumps along the Day Hill Trail (Superior Hiking Trail) near Campsites 12 & 13.

Habitat:
In moist, rocky, silty, clay along the edge of the trail which here follows a subtle drainage on the gradual, lower, east-facing slope of Day Hill. Partial shade beneath patchy canopy of Betula papyrifera. Additional robust clumps along small drainageways and other moist spots along trails in the vicinity. Dark maroon basal sheaths.

Associates include Carex pallescens, C. gracillima, Equisetum arvense, Rubus pubescens, Athyrium angustum, Ranunculus acris, Anemone quinquefolia.
