Local, infrequent in a small ash swamp along a small stream. Interrupted canopy of Fraxinus nigra. Patchy shrub layer of Corylus cornuta, Acer spicatum, Prunus virginiana, Ulmus americana. Moist, rocky, shallow organic soil, often on or near small mossy boulders.
Additional associates include Carex pedunculata, C. peckii, Uvularia grandiflora, Aralia racemosa, A. nudicaulis, Matteuccia struthiopteris, Athyrium angustum, Actaea rubra, Maianthemum canadense, Arisaema triphyllum.
