Habitat:
Local on the narrow bottomland, near the base of a steep, 220-foot, northwest-facing bluff. Occasional in a ~one-acre groundwater seepage meadow. Forms clumps. Maroon basal sheaths. Moist to wet organic silt. Mostly in sun.

Associates include Eleocharis erythropoda, Carex laevivaginata, C. stipata, C. cristatella, C. retrorsa, C. vulpinoidea, C. granularis, Scirpus atrovirens, Glyceria striata, G. grandis, Aster prenanthoides, Equisetum arvense, Packera aurea, Impatiens capensis, Galium asprellum, Cardamine bulbosa, Caltha palustris.
