Habitat:
Frequent locally atop a narrow ridge between steep, 100-foot slopes. Gently sloping bluff top setting near the top of south-facing cliffs. Past-grazed and overgrown oak savanna (where Juniperus virginiana has recently been removed). Patchy canopy of open-grown Quercus macrocarpa. Patchy, short understory of Ostrya virginiana, Rhamnus cathartica, and Lonicera xbella. Partial shade. Rocky silt.

Associates include Carex cephalophora, Andropogon gerardii, Galium boreale, Smilacina stellata, Triosteum perfoliatum, Commandra umbellata, Amorpha canescens.
