Habitat:
Quite local atop a narrow ridge between steep, 100-foot slopes. Gently sloping bluff top setting, near the top of south-facing cliffs. Past-grazed, overgrown oak savanna (where large Juniperus virginiana have recently been removed). Patchy canopy of open-grown Quercus macrocarpa. Patchy, short understory of Ostrya virginiana, Rhamnus cathartica, and Lonicera xbella. Partial shade. Rocky silt.

Associates include Dichanthelium leibergii, Andropogon gerardii, Commandra umbellata, Galium boreale, Geum triflorum, Triosteum perfoliatum, Amorpha canescens.
