Locality: United States, Minnesota, Fillmore, Rugged forested terrain along the Root River two miles southwest of Rushford, two miles east-northeast of Peterson.

Habitat: Uncommon and local on a large sand terrace that here extends 250 feet up the base of 480-foot northerly-facing bluffs here. Several dense patches encountered in a fairly extensive (~60-acre), degraded (past-grazed), pine-oak savanna. Patchy canopy dominated by Pinus banksiana, Juniperus virginiana, and Quercus velutina. Partial sun to full shade. Deep sand with lots of organics in upper horizon. Fruiting plants are infrequent. Low shrubs, mostly 12-16 inches high.
Associated Species: Associates include Juniperus communis, Ostrya virginiana, Galium boreale, G. concinnum, Heuchera richardsonii, Carex pensylvanica.
