Habitat:
Occasional to frequent on a large sand terrace that extends 260 feet up the base of 480-foot, north- to west-facing bluffs. Degraded barrens prairie / oak savanna recovering from past grazing. Full sun to partial shade of Juniperus virginiana, Quercus velutina, and occasional Pinus banksiana. Loose clumps in deep silty-sand. Level to gently-sloping settings.

Additional associates include Carex siccata, C. brevior, C. pensylvanica, Dichanthelium oligosanthes, Poa compressa, P. pratensis, Lithospermum caroliniense, Achillea millefolium, Hedyotis longifolia, Euphorbia corollata, Rumex acetosella, Potentilla recta.
