Habitat:
Uncommon and local on a large, gently-sloping sand terrace that extends ~250 feet up the base of 480-foot, north- to west-facing bluffs. A few small patches encountered in ~40 acres of degraded and overgrown oak barrens. Full sun to partial shade of Quercus velutina, Juniperus virginiana, and Pinus banksiana. In open sand on the slopes of a ravine cut into the terrace, and also in wind-blown sand that covers a portion of the steep upper slope of the bluff.

Associates include Koeleria macrantha, Cyperus lupulinus, Carex siccata, Poa compressa, Viola pedata, Euphorbia corollata, Solidago nemoralis.
