Local on a large, sloping sand terrace that extends ~250 feet up the base of 480-foot bluffs. Frequent to locally abundant in portions of a fairly extensive (~40-acre) degraded and overgrown oak barrens. Full sun to partial shade of Quercus velutina, Juniperus virginiana, and Pinus banksiana. In open sand on the terrace, and in wind-blown sand that covers a portion of the steep upper slope of a west-facing bluff.
Associates include Koeleria macrantha, Poa compressa, P. pratensis, Carex siccata, Cyperus lupulinus, Solidago nemoralis, Euphorbia corollata, Helianthemum canadense, Juniperus communis.
