United States, Minnesota, St. Louis, Rolling to fairly rugged terrain between Highway 169 and the Purvis Lake Forest Road, seven miles southwest of Ely.
Occasional to locally common in a ~120-acre spruce bog one mile west-southwest of Twin Lakes. Patchy and often short canopy dominated by stunted Picea mariana. Small to fairly extensive infestation patches here, the larger ones are several acres in size. Growing on the live younger twigs of Picea mariana, where it is often quite abundant. Often producing distorted growth (brooms) on trees with older infestations. Full sun to partial shade. Deep, saturated peat with continuous moss carpets (Sphagnum, Pleurozium).
Additional associates include Chamaedaphne calyculata, Ledum groenlandicum, Kalmia polifolia.
