Habitat:
Quite local in a narrow zone of beaver-flooded ash swamp, on the margin of an upland rise east of the river. Occasional in shallow water along the margins of a beaver run that extends into the swamp from a nearby beaver pond. Shaded by patchy canopy of young Fraxinus nigra, and a tall shrub layer of Alnus incana. Purple flowers, these readily dropping when touched.

Associates include Carex lacustris, C. retrorsa, Glyceria striata, Ranunculus gmelini, Caltha palustris, Veronica scutellata, Equisetum arvense, Scutellaria lateriflora.
