Occasional in a rich cedar swamp. Fairly dense canopy dominated by Thuja occidentalis, with occasional Fraxinus nigra, Abies balsamea, and Betula papyrifera. Understory of scattered Alnus incana, Fraxinus nigra, and Abies balsamea. Loose to quite dense patches, some with hundreds of upright shoots. In moss carpets (Thuidium, Rhytidiadelphus, etc.) over moist to saturated peat.
