Habitat:
Uncommon and local on the steep lower portion of an extremely steep, west- to southwest-facing, 300-foot bluff. Loose colony of several hundred plants on the margin of a bluff prairie, where it grades to degraded woods. Partial shade of Juniperus virginiana, Physocarpus opulifolius, Lonicera xbella, Cornus racemosa, Viburnum lentago, and Rhamnus cathartica. Rocky silt. Some plants with clusters of small basal leaves.

Additional associates include Ratibida pinnata, Rubus strigosus, Symphyotrichum oolentangiense, Sorghastrum nutans, Bouteloua curtipendula, Zanthoxylum americanum.
