Habitat: At the margin of a mesic deciduous forest where it meets an old field.
Associated Species: Associated with Corylus americana, Crataegus punctata, Cornus foemina ssp. racemosa.
Description: A thicket-forming shrub 2.9 meters tall with multiple stems mostly 5-6 cm in dia. Stamens ca 20, anthers white. Thorns all simple, long and distinctly hooked; 2-3 days before peak anthesis (later than chrysocarpa)
