Elevation:
1900 meters
(6232ft)
Habitat:
on fine glacial sand below the stone glacier
Associated Species:
Racomitrium canescens, Webera gracilis
Description:
"The curling of the leaf margin varies a lot. On the small specimens the edge is almost flat, on the larger ones it is often quite clearly rolled over. The only feature that can be used to separate tortile pusillum is the straight lid cells. The shorter and duller leaves are the rule in high alpine forms."
Notes:
"Just like at the original location, which is about 20 kilometers away in a direct line, the moss grows on glacier sand between Webera gracilis. The great rarity of the richly fruity moss is probably due to the fact that it is always overgrown by Weber gracilis and Racomitrium canescens. At the lower Aar glacier I found it only sparse, while according to Schimper it should be abundant there."
