Habitat: Rugged terrain...old-growth northern hardwood forest on gradual northwest-facing slope near top of 180-foot ridge...Co-dominant in canopy with large Betula allegheniensis. Dominant in understory and shrub layer. Common also as seedlings in ground layer. Rocky, loamy soil. Additional associates include Acer spicatum, Prunus virginiana, Cornus alternifolia, Thuja occidentalis, Clintonia borealis, Polygonatum pubescens, Dryopteris intremedia, Anemone quinquefolia, Carex pedunculata, Oryzopsis asperifolia.
