In the understory of a mesic hardwood/conifer forest dominated by Populus tremuloides and Picea glauca. In thin rocky soil. This is a distinctly upland habitat. Associated with Betula papyrifera, Thuja occidentalis, Populus balsamifera, Salix bebbiana, Acer spicatum.
