Locality:
United States, Minnesota, Pine, Banning State Park. Along the east side of the Kettle River opposite the mouth of Wolf Creek, in rugged bedrock terrain one mile north-northeast of downtown Sandstone.

Habitat:
Local on a level to gently-sloping bedrock terrace, on the lower third of a steep, 120-foot, northwest-facing bluff. Frequent here, a loose colony of dozens of shoots in a bedrock woodland dominated locally by young Acer rubrum. Understory includes Abies balsamea, Betula alleghaniensis, and Quercus macrocarpa. The horizontal stems are buried at least three inches deep in fairly shallow loamy soil (over the sandstone bedrock).
