Habitat:
Frequent on a large gravel bar exposed by receding river levels. Moist, coarse sand with a dry cap of rounded cobbles (mostly 1-5 inches in diameter), within 12 inches of the present water level. Full sun.

Associates include Cyperus squarrosus, Lipocarpha micrantha, Agrostis scabra, Panicum philadelphicum, Phalaris arundinacea, Persicaria lapathifolia, P. hydropiper, Amaranthus tuberculatus, Physostegia virginiana, Bidens cernua, B. connata, Veronica catenata, Mentha arvensis, Aster ontarionis, and seedlings of Salix interior, Acer saccharinum, and Populus deltoides.
