Habitat:
On the margin of an alder swamp, on the back side of the beach and just inland from a small slough. Shaded by tall Alnus incana and Salix discolor. Wet, well-decomposed, mucky peat. Climbing by twining around alder branches and twigs, to 6+ feet high. Dark red flowers, these with a rather strongly pungent fragrance.

Additional associates include Calamagrostis canadensis, Poa palustris, Carex lacustris, C. projecta, Impatiens capensis, Thelypteris palustris, Equisetum arvense, Scutellaria lateriflora, Mentha arvensis, Smilacina stellata, Stachys palustris, Urtica dioica, Cornus stolonifera.
