Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake of the Woods, Northwest Angle. Along the shore of Lake of the Woods at Rooty Point, 25 miles northeast of Warroad.

Habitat: On the margin of an alder swamp, on the back side of the beach and just inland from a small slough. Shaded by tall Alnus incana and Salix discolor. Wet, well-decomposed, mucky peat. Climbing by twining around alder branches and twigs, to 6+ feet high. Dark red flowers, these with a rather strongly pungent fragrance.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Calamagrostis canadensis, Poa palustris, Carex lacustris, C. projecta, Impatiens capensis, Thelypteris palustris, Equisetum arvense, Scutellaria lateriflora, Mentha arvensis, Smilacina stellata, Stachys palustris, Urtica dioica, Cornus stolonifera.
