Locality:
United States, Minnesota, Winona, Whitewater Wildlife Management Area. Rugged forested terrain two miles north of Utica, along the South Fork Whitewater River, downstream from Holt Spring.

Habitat:
Locally common atop a steep, 200-foot, southwest-facing bluff. Spreading and often many-branched shrubs in a tiny strip of overgrown bluff prairie, in a gently sloping setting just back from the top of a large (~80-foot high), dry cliff. Partial sun to shaded by Juniperus virginiana. Silty soil, fairly shallow to dolomite bedrock.

Additional associates include Schizachryrium scoparium, Carex pensylvanica, C. eburnea, C. richardsonii, Galium boreale, Anemone patens, Smilacina stellata, Symphoricarpos albus, Physocarpus opulifolius.
