United States, Minnesota, Lake of the Woods, Northwest Angle. Rolling to fairly rugged bedrock terrain on Oak Island, 11 miles east-southeast of Angle Inlet, 35 miles northeast of Warroad.

Habitat:
Common in mesic woodland. Canopy of Thuja occidentalis, Betula papyrifera, Abies balsamea, and Picea glauca. Understory of Abies balsamea, with scattered Acer spicatum. Shade to partial sun. Forming small to large and loose to dense patches in level to sloping ridge top settings. Wormed, rocky, sandy-silt. Often in mats of Pleurozium schreberi and Dicranum polysetum. Horizontal stems 2-3 cm deep.

Associates include Pteridium aquilinum, Lycopodium lagopus, Huperzia lucidula, Dendrolycopodium hickeyi, Platanthera hookeri, Cornus canadensis.
