Infrequent and local in mesic woodland. Canopy of Thuja occidentalis, Betula papyrifera, Abies balsamea, and Picea glauca. Understory of Abies balsamea, with scattered Acer spicatum. Shade to partial sun. Forming small loose patches in level to sloping ridge top settings. Heavily-wormed, rocky, sandy-silt. Often in carpets of Pleurozium schreberi and Dicranum polysetum.
