Locality: United States, Minnesota, Stearns, St. Wendel Swamp. Large peatland complex, on rolling till plain 4.5 miles northwest of St. Joseph, 4.5 miles east-northeast of Avon.

Habitat: Occasional in a tamarack swamp dominated locally by maturing Larix laricina. Partial sun to full shade. Mucky, wet, moderately buoyant peat. Forming clumps, in wet hollows. [Subtle and limited, but distinct, maroon color present on the basal sheaths of some culms- somewhat intermediate to Carex hysteracina?]
Associated Species: Additional associates include Thelypteris palustris, Caltha palustris, Glyceria striata, Rhamnus alnifolia.
