Habitat:
Occasional to locally abundant in rich mesic hardwood forest dominated by Acer saccharum, with occasional Quercus macrocarpa, Tilia americana, and Fraxinus nigra. Understory includes Ostrya virginiana and Ulmus americana. Level to gently sloping settings. Rich, black silty-loam. Cespitose, but forming small to often quite large patches.
