Locality: United States, Minnesota, Stearns, Spirit Prairie Wildlife Management Area. Nearly level outwash plain one mile north of Paynesville, just west of the city's sewage treatment ponds.

Habitat: Quite local in a small (~1/8-acre) subtly higher elevation wet prairie opening in a dense willow - dogwood swamp. Full sun. Wet mucky peat. Loose patch of dozens of fertile culms, with maroon coloration on many/most sheaths.
Associated Species: Associates include Carex pellita, C. buxbaumii, C. sartwellii, Spartina pectinata, Helianthus gigantea, Campanula aparinoides, Solidago gigantea, Aster borealis, Caltha palustris, Equisetum arvense, Cornus sericea, Salix petiolaris.
